Part two of the designer interview series:we sat down with London Based menswear designer, Priyadarshani Limbu, who recently graduated from the London college of fashion. see the exclusive Q&A below:
Where did it start for you?
My sister was really good at creative arts, like textiles, drawing etc. so i thought, if she can do it, so can i. I actually failed textiles at college, but my tutor was able to get me onto a level 2 textiles course, which led onto level 3. at this point i decided that i wanted to do menswear, only because its kind of RESTRICTED when i compared it to WOMENSWEAR and i wanted to explore that.
What challenges have you faced in the industry?
The first challenge was probably me myself, when you lack confidence in your talent or work, that usually ends up pushing everything back. Another big one is when you have all the talent and skills that you need but a big company cannot reciprocate it with support and OPPORTUNITY. it MAKES IT really hard for a lot of young creatives out there to really move up in their craft.
WHAT DOES ‘NOBODY LIKES US EXCEPT US’ MEAN TO YOU?
the industry is very one track minded, in the sense that companies will usually only hire people like them and that’s especially harder when you’re a minority. i would encourage companies to expand their criteria and be more open to hiring people that might not NECESSARILY fit their ‘image’ as there’s people with undiscovered creative talent being hidden from the industry.
What have you been working on and whats next up?
I’ve recently completed an outfit for UK SINger/songwriter Afro B, and also have some other client work. I’ve also had a studio set up here in Croydon to show some of my work and designs and want to just build community awareness so that people around just know what i do and how i do it.
