Thestreetsarecold presents, the class of 2021, a london fashion week project showcasing our pick of the 2021 underground creative talent within the fashion industry, Starting ofF with Jakelle Studios.

Where did it start for you?

it all started after I watched a documentary called ‘The True Cost’. It was about the negative impact that the fast fashion industry is having on the environment and people. It was horrible hearing about the mistreatment of the garment workers in particular and I decided that I would try and find some more ethical brands to shop with. There were brands out there that were honest about their manufacturing processes and that used organic materials, but none of it was my style. I could already sew and decided to just start making my own pieces. This way I would be able to source fabrics that weren’t so damaging to the environment and have the confidence that no one was being mistreated in the whole production process. I started selling some pieces that I’d made and then decided to build it in to a brand.

Why will 2021 be your year?

2021 is the lunar year of the Ox, which is also my birth year so I think that’s enough for me to believe 2021 is my year! But also I honestly think that just having the belief in what you’re doing and truly enjoying it means that it’s already a success and that is exactly what I’m doing right now, it’s already been my year.

What does ‘nobody likes us except us’ mean to you?

it’s the concept that within the creative industries many artists are dismissed or not given the proper recognition they deserve. I’m very lucky to have the support of the people around me but this isn’t the case for everyone. The government trying to dissuade people from creative jobs in their recent anti-arts "re-skilling" campaign was a clear demonstration of how undervalued the arts are. I hope the critics can be reminded of the main industry that has kept us occupied this whole crazy transition period of being in ‘lockdown’; the arts. Watching films, listening to music, being creative.

‘Nobody likes us except us’ gives a sense of comfort to those who do feel undervalued in the creative industry in the sense that, despite any outside disbelief, we always have ‘us’.

Whats next up for Jakelle Studios?

I’m working on a new collection for summer, the summer which I’m determined to have despite everything going on at the moment! I just want to continue to show people that ‘ethical’ and ’sustainable’ fashion can look however you want it to look and try to encourage people to really question the ethics behind where they’re spending their money.

What advice would you give to someone starting out / thinking about doing so?

I’d say just get started in one way or another. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect cause it never will be and you’ll just keep putting it off. Just create and get it out there. The best way to learn is to do and you’ll enjoy the whole process a lot more as you’ll be able to see and appreciate your own growth. Also, if it’s something you’re really passionate about and you have the true belief that it will be a success, then it will be.
